On our first Tuesday class (9/5) the algebra 1 students will be given tests to evaluate their current abilities and to determine if they are in the correct class.

The next day, Wednesday (9/6) I will lecture on the first four lessons of the textbook and assign the required homework to be turned in the following Tuesday (9/12).

First homework is due Tuesday, 9/12.

First test: Tuesday, 9/19.

Recommended review prior to the first class day (9/5):

  1. Multiplication facts/tables
  2. How to add a column of numbers
  3. How to subtract, including borrowing
  4. How to multiply two large numbers
  5. How to perform long division
  6. Fractions – adding, subtracting, multiplying
  7. Solve equations by adding a number to both sides.
  8. Solve equations by multiplying both sides by a number.

The first day of class will be Tuesday, 9/5, at 1:00 pm.

We will be meeting two days per week. Tuesdays, 1:00 – 3:00 pm, and Wednesdays, 11 am – 1 pm.

Please order the textbook now, if you haven’t already: Saxon’s Algebra 1, 3rd edition. Please make sure you purchase the third edition.

Your student should bring to class every day:

The textbook
A pencil or pen (black or blue ink)
Paper: Standard-size loose leaf white college-ruled lined paper

Size: either 8.5 by 11 inch or 8 by 10.5 inch. Please not smaller.
Homework and tests should be turned in on this type of paper.
Please, no spiral notebook paper, or graph paper, or other colors of paper than white.
Spiral notebooks may be used for taking notes, but not required.


Mr. Baumgaertel will help students develop a firm algebra foundation in this beginning course. Algebra is a key course in high school education.  Students must understand algebra to succeed in many other courses and to attend Running Start.
